Averting famine in South Sudan
These images were taken in February 2014 in South Sudan. Massive food insecurity is threatening the country as large populations are cut off from humanitarian assistance by insecurity and bad infrastructure. Road networks are barely existent during rains, and ongoing fighting means assessment and response teams can't easily reach people in need.
Here in the vast swamplands of the Sudd, tens of thousands of people have been living without food or sanitation on inaccessible islands. They fled after attackers, allegedly from Rumbek, swarmed across the county burning houses and raiding cattle in early February. Flying over the county headquarters of Panyjiar, at least half of the houses appeared to have been burned to the ground. The people on the islands need food, but they're difficult to reach. “If you don’t have a canoe, you can’t go there”, said Simon Kuol, coordinator of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission of Panyjiar county in southern Unity state.

Shattered dreams in the world's youngest nation

Shattered Dreams is a multimedia series produced for IRIN News about the 2013/14 crisis in South Sudan, it's origins, drivers and likely outcomes.
The project was about giving a voice to people on the ground in South Sudan, and distilling a complex subject into easily comprehendible parts.
Shattered dreams was a co-production with the photographer, Phil Moore.

Guinea Bissau military chief indicted by US on narco-terrorism charges
I took this photograph during an interview with Antonio Indjai, who a US court later accused of conspiring to sell surface-to-air missiles to terrorists, and narco-terrorism. Despite this indictment, he remains Chief of Staff of the Guinea Bissau armed forces.
I like to think he chose his shirt specially for our interview. Nothing says 'I'm a friendly guy' like a Hawaiian.
